Formal pool designs
In many garden settings a formal design may be more appropriate, or sometimes a hybrid of both formal and natural outlines can work very well.
Due to their more formal pool-like designs, this type of design is often referred to as a ”natural swimming pool" (rather than "swimming pond").
These more formal pools are often more "designed" than natural-looking ponds - the pool can be any shape or size, and the filtration area can be to one side, above or below, or completely separate from the swimming area.
Note also that the filtration/planting area only need take up 20% of the total water surface, so this option can work very well in small spaces. Plants are also not necessary if not required, so the filtration can be under decking or another structure.
